If we take x gram of the 24 carat gold and y is the 16 carat gold be mixed together to make and get the 18 carat pure gold.

So, x*24+y*16/(x+y) will be equal to 18 or 24x+16y=16x+18y which on solving we will get that 6x=2y and now taking the values as ratio we will get x:y as 1:3 and hence the proportion of 24 carat gold will be 1 and the proportion of 16 carat gold will be 3 times.
