I am so happy that someone asked this question that why our constitution is written.
As you might be aware that our constitution has adopted major part of its provisions from Government of India act 1935, which itself was very large. Many people blame our founding fathers that they have copy pasted the constitution from the Act of 1935 but they fail to analyse that the Act of 1935 and all previous acts and regulating acts was result of our freedom fighters struggle which forced British to make them as laws. So we have complete authority over all pre independence acts and regulations. Secondly, Indian constitution not only has only rights and preamble but also every details of administration and executive, making it larger constitution than any other written constitution of the world.
Unlike British constitution which is not written , India has written constitution for a a very basic reason. During pre independence era our people were denied their rights and hence very sceptical whether they would have the same after independence, And hence to assure the citizens, constituent assembly decided to have written constitution and fundamental rights.
