Let the ratio in which the point on x-axis R(x,0) divides the line segment joining the point P(4,3) and Q(4,-5) be k : 1

Now,

0=\frac{k(-5)+1(3)}{k+1}                             ( Using section formula)

=>0=-5k+3

=>-5k=-3

=>k=\frac{3}{5}

Therefore the ratio in which the x-axis divides the line segment joining the points P and Q is 3:5.

Hope it clears all your doubts.
