Let y - axis divides the line into ratio m₁ : m₂.

Given points : (- 1, 1), (2, 3)

Here, x₁ = - 1, x₂ = 2

Section formula = ( m₁x₁ + m₂x₂ ) / m₁ + m₂

⇒ 0 = [ m₁ (- 1) + m₂ (2) ] / m₁ + m₂

⇒ 0 = - m₁ + 2m₂

⇒ m₁ = 2m₂

⇒ m₁ / m₂ = 2 / 1

⇒ m₁ : m₂ = 2 : 1

Hence, y - axis divides the line into 2 : 1.
