Answer:

Let x₁y₁ = 10,8 ; x₂y₂ = -6,4.

Let the point on the y-axis be P(y,0).

Let m=k, n=1

We know that if point P(y, 0) divides the segment AB, where A = (x₁, y₁) and B = (x₂, y₂), internally in the ratio m: n, then,

y= (mx₂ + nx₁)÷(m+n)  

and

0= (my₂ + ny₁)÷(m+n) ----- (2)

Consider equation (2).

Substitute the values.

0 = (k×4+1×8)÷(k+1)

k+1 = 4k+8

k-4k=8-1

-3k=7

k= -3/7

Thus, the ratio is -3:7
