we have to find the ratio of line segment joining the points (4,6) and (-7, -1) divided by y -axis.

in case of y - axis, x - coordinate =0

so, point on y - axis will be (0, y)

now, let line joining the points (4,6) and (-7, -1) is divided by y-axis in k : 1 ratio.

for x co-ordinate, x = \frac{kx_2+x_1}{k+1}

here, x_2=-7,x_2=4 and x = 0

so, 0 = {k(-7) + 4}/(k + 1)

or, -7k + 4 = 0

or, k = 4/7

hence, ratio is 4 : 7
