In what ratio will the force of attraction between the same two bodies change when the distance between these is (1) (i) halved ? (ii) Tripled ?

As we know F = (G×M×m)/d² ---- Original Force = F

When the distance is halved-

F = (GMm)/(1/2d)² ------ G×M×m/ 1/4d²

therefore, 4(G ×M×m) /d² = 4F

hence the original force has become 4 times greater

so the ratio will be -- of original force : New force

= F / 4F

= 1: 4

Now when the distance is tripled ...

F = GMm/ (3d)² = GMm/ 9d² i.e. 1/9(GMm)/d² -- 1/9F

hence the force has become 1/9 th of the original one therefore the ratio of orginal force : New Force

= F / 1/9 F = 9F/F = 9:1
