in the poem fire and ice both these words execute human nature or behaviour. fire here stands for jealousy and ice stands for hatred. both these in extremes can lead to destruction of world as poet already sees jealousy existing within everyone and that too in a negative sense. but while comparing he realizes that there is enough of hatred which can ultimately lead to end of the world.
