With well-researched and properly written pieces of literature, writers are able to portray the cruelty of society and relationships. When they are based on or inspired from real life events, they give the story a greater impact. Using the first person narration is also helpful in making the reader feel the emotions that the character is experiencing. The ending of the writing is also important. A positive ending can showcase how no matter what, the time is not too late and there is still ways to save the situation while a negative ending lasts longer with the reader and can tell him or her about the reality and intensity of these situations.

Different writers use different literary devices to portray different aspects of the world in their prose and poetry. The most used ways are:

(i) Irony: Irony is a form of writing in which the writer uses the language which actually means the opposite. Irony is used best in the portrayal of the cruelty of the society. The sarcastic tone of irony adds more effect to the piece of writing. Examples of irony are;
            (i) Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare.
            (ii) Oedipus Rex, Sophocles.

(ii) Satire: Satire is the use of humor and ridicule in order to present the true face of different aspects of the society. Satire can be used for the portrayal of the society as well as relationships. Examples of satire are:
             (i) The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain.
             (ii) The Rape of the Lock, Alexander Pope.
