in cold countries as atmospheric temperature decreases the upper layers of the lakes rivers extra cool contract and shrink to the bottom this goes on until the whole of the water reaches the temperature of 4 °Celsius when the top layer cools for their their temperature falls below 4 ° Celsius
it expands and becomes lighter it does not shrink downwards and remains at the top with further cooling that of layers gradually form ice at the top
the eyes and the water are bad conductors of heat so the lower layer are protected against to freezing by the layers of Ice and cold water at 1 Degree Celsius to degree Celsius and 3 degrees celsius this result in water remaining at the bottom at 4 degrees celsius so that aquatic animals survive in those layers of water

The anonymous expansion of water is water unlike most substances expand when it freezes. The temperature decreases while density of water increases.

The biggest advantage is that when water gets cold and expands it have less dense.
