the dear departed is satirical as the 'dear soul'(grandfather)was hardly dear to any adult character.it talks about the greed of human beings for materialistic things who neglect their relations for the same. mrs.slater and mrs.jordan are the same kind of vain and shrewd people.they do not love their father and wait for his death to grab his assets.this shows the satirical side of the dear departed.

mrs.slater-shrewd,vain,competitive wity

mrs.jordan-shrewd vain competitive wity

mr. slater-weak submissive not clever

mr.jordan-humorous insensitive
