in displacement reaction,the more reactive element replaces less active element in a solution.

a+bc---------->ac+b

iron +gold sulphate——---------->iron sulphate+gold

in double displacement 2 active elements replace each other in a solution

ab+cd---------->ad+bc

Answer:

In a displacement reaction the more reactive metal displaces a lesser reactive metal from its salt solution

Metal A + Salt Solution B → Metal B + Salt Solution A

Eg: Zinc + Copper Sulphate → Zinc Sulphate+ Copper (Zinc is more reactive than copper)

     Iron + Copper Sulphate → Ferrous Sulphate + Copper (Iron is more reactive than Copper)

In a double displacement reaction, there is mutual exchange of ions taking place.

Eg: Potassium Iodide + Lead Nitrate → Potassium Nitrate and Lead Iodide

     Sodium Sulphate + Barium Chloride → Barium Sulphate + Sodium Chloride
