The Socialist Revolutionaries were somewhat influenced by Marxist ideas but drew eclectically from a wide range of left-wing social theories including anarchism (which was also a significant school of socialist thought in Russia) and various forms of utopian socialism.

Both the Social Democrats and the Socialist Revolutionaries split into moderate and radical factions. In the case of the social democrats, this resulted in the dissolution of the party and the founding of two rival parties; the orthodox Marxist, moderate Mensheviks and the radical revolutionary Bolsheviks (who would later rename themselves “communists”). The Socialist Revolutionaries, on the other hand, did not entirely split but the Right and Left factions operated as de facto separate parties.
