? I did not exactly understand it at the age of 12, so I dug deeper into text books and finally got it: »Plants must be the selfless creatures ever.« All they do all their life is work for us. Photosynthesis is a process in which carbon is taken out of the carbon dioxide, that is the gas that we breathe out. This carbon is then built into all sorts of sugars and other carbohydrates that feed us. Oxygen is the byproduct of this process called photosynthesis. Ironically this byproduct made life on earth as we know it possible.
To put it in chemical terms: CO2 (carbon dioxide) is broken into C (carbon) and O2 (oxygen). Sugars and the more complex carbohydrates are comprised of C and other substances that a plant sucks up from the soil. They are the food that gives us energy. Let’s respect this energy and eat with care. Getting fat and then totally cutting off the carbohydrates is going to disrupt the balance between us and the plants.
We will also show respect to plants by being grateful for the oxygen we breathe. I am not trying to say that we should be obsessed with saying thanks all the time. But it is a good thing to be grateful for oxygen at moments, when the whole world seems to be against us.
