In winter this happens through the intrusion of Bay of Bengal waters into the Arabian Sea, when the southward flowing East India Coastal Current carrying low salinity waters from the northern Bay feeds into the West India Coastal Current flowing north along the shelf in the Arabian Sea.

• The Arabian sea was formed in past 50 million years ago when the Indian subcontinent collided with the landmass of Asia and stretching south-westwards from the Socotra to Carlsberg ridge.

• Due to the seismic activity of the Indian ocean which divided the Arabian basin into the east and the Somali Basin in the west.

• With the splitting, of the Carlsberg ridge by the central valley that reached a depth of 11,800 feet below the sea level surface the escarpment got formed in the Gulf of Aden.

• The Bay of Bengal is a northeastern part of the Indian ocean and has Indian on the north and Bangladesh on the east. Its southern limit is Sri Lanka and occupies about 2,172,000 km sq. Most of the river flows into the bay of legal and form deltas.  

• The bay is 1000 miles wide and has an average depth of 8,500 feet, sediments that are found in the base of the Bay of Bengal are those of the terrigenous deposits.

• The sea was formed by the opening of the eastern Indian ocean and the process of the seafloor spreading.
