Well, the intricate interdependence is somewhat like this.

Life as we know it, exists only on the paper thin crust of the earth, i.e. on topsoil. Go up a beyond 30,000 m, nothing lives due to lack of oxygen. Dig down, nothing survives in the molten heat.

On topsoil grows grass & all vegetation, in which live insects, rodents, reptiles. On these feed birds, herbivores, carnivores, up the chain to apex of the pyramid of food chain.

All life returns to dust, or topsoil, in some form eventually, to invigorate the earth. On this survive the grasses & vegetation.

The cycle is complete.
