Indians were depicted as inferior in the paintings. India was shown as a quaint, unexplored land. Its landscape was wild and rugged. The traditional life of Indians was typified by cows, boats and faqirs.

The painting 'The Aurial and Dashwood Families of Calcutta' by Johann Zoffany shows Thomas Dashwood and Charlotte Lousia Aurial entertaining guests. A number of Indian servants are shown serving tea. The British are shown sitting or standing regally in the sprawling lawn. The Indians are placed in the back ground. The picture shows that the Indian were submissive and inferior to the British. It suggests that the British were more powerful than the Indians.

Many researchers in the past have depicted India as inferior to the British and the Americans.

Although most of the Indians were not much different, there were deficient most of the time. Also, the different and specific rituals, cultures, and the domestic life of the Indians were regarded to be inferior to those of the civilized Europeans and Americans.

Most of the pictures that were released by the press showed the Indians as primitive and uncivilized tribal-like people. Also, they were depicted as inferior to the technologically superior Whites.

Also, the concept of modernization started only after the Britishers invaded India, so the credit was lost to them as India was considered as a rugged, untamed land which under the influence of the Britishers became modern.
