The main features that would distinguish a butterfly from other insects are its wings and mouth. Butterfly (and moth) wings are covered with scales which gives them the color and pattern. If you touch the wings (and you really shouldn't), those scales come off on your fingers and look like dust. Also the mouth is unique - it is a coiled feeding tube called a proboscis.

Butterflies and moths (Order Lepidoptera) still have all the other characteristics of insects (six legs, 3 body parts, antennae).

The important characteristics that would differentiate a butterfly from other insects are their wings and mouth.

Explanation:

  • Butterflies wings are covered with scales. This gives them the color and different pattern. If we touch the wings which we are not supposed to do, those scales get attached to our fingers and appears like dust.
  • Also, the mouth of the butterflies is very different which is a coiled feeding tube called a proboscis. However, Butterflies and moths have all the other characteristics of common insects.
