  • It legalized the remarriage of Hindu widows
  • in all jurisdictions of India under East India Company rule.
  • In those days, Remarriage of Hindu widow was not allowed in order to protect their family honor and family property.
  • Hindu widows including children and adolescents expected to live a life with difficult economic conditions, abandonment and self-sacrifice.
  •  Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was the main reason to enact The Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act of 1856.
  • The act provided safeguards against loss of certain forms of inheritance for a remarrying Hindu widow.



This act does not allow the widow to inherit property from

her deceased husband especially in child widow whose husbands had died

before consummation of marriage.
