The Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856, also Act XV, 1856, was enacted on 26 July 1856.
It legalized the remarriage of Hindu widows in all jurisdictions of India under East India Company rule.
In those days, Remarriage of Hindu widow was not allowed in order to protect their family honor and family property.

Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was the main reason to enact The Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act of 1856. The act provided safeguards against loss of certain forms of inheritance for a remarrying Hindu widow.
This act does not allow the widow to inherit property from her deceased husband especially in child widow whose husbands had died before consummation of marriage.
