During the British rule, many of the Zamindars were Indian princes who lost their sovereignty.
The prominence of Zamindars were different before the British rule in India. The land taxes generated a large amount of revenue and the lands were divided into various sections. Zamindars were sub ordinates of Jagirdars who were the owners of the land.
Even though Zamindars existed in India, Zamindari system was established by Cornwallis in 1793 through Permanent Settlement Act. Charles Cornwallis, then Governor General of India is remembered as one of the Greatest leaders who fought the American war of Independence.
