It all depends on the pitch of the sound. The more high is the pitch ,the more shrill is the sound and less the pitch the more hoarness is there in sound. And the pitch of the sound also depends on the enlargement of the throaix or the Adam's apple.

Adam's apple is not found in girls so their throat is not enlarged which causes a shrill sound and the same case in babies.

While boys and men have Adams apple and theirs throat is enlarged which causes the production of less pitched sound.

So pitch of the sound affects and differs the sound from one another.
