Sludge means a semi-solid form of matter that settles down at the bottom after completion of the waste water treatment.
This sludge that has been obtained in the waste water treatment can be used as inoculums, a bacteria which helps in the decomposition of waste water that is coming next.

This sludge is used to obtain methane, carbon dioxide and humus like material by a process called digestion. It consists of decomposing the sludge with the help of anaerobic bacteria. Dried sludge can be used as a fertiliser. The methane formed can be used as a fuel.
