How I’ve always understood it is that there are two sides of the political spectrum, left and right, with left being more liberal and right being more conservative. This applies to many different countries, though in other places the middle ground is often different.
Now republicans and democrats are political parties, meaning that they have a specific subset of ideologies and different politicians. Generally democrats fall on the left side of the spectrum and republicans fall on the right, though it is possible to have a right-wing democrat or a left-wing republican. A right-wing democrat could be someone who is economically more conservative but socially more liberal.
Political parties are ran by people and have specific agendas, liberal/conservative is more of an ideology.
