Gitanjali

Rabindranath Tagore is the first Nobel Laureate of India. The great poet, philosopher and educationist won the Nobel Prize for his exceptional collection of poems called Gitanjali.

The word 'Gitanjali' has an etymological root in Sanskrit. The word is formed from two individual words- Git and Anjali .

The word Git means 'song'.

The word 'Anjali' means an offering to God.

Gitanjali thus refers to songs in praise of God.

Tagore used the word 'Gitanjali' to name his collection of poems which can be put to music, all in praise of God.

The collection comprises translations of fifty three poems from the original Bengali collection also called Gitanjali ,as well as fifty other poems which are from his drama Achalayatana  and eight other books of poetry –mainly the Gitimalya , Naivadya  and  Kheya .

The title of the poem is most appropriate as each and every poem is spiritual in nature. Each poem can be sung as a song justifying the word 'Git'.

Each poem is an offering to God and sings His praise therefore foregrounds the word Anjali.
