the vernacular press was used to expose the evils of the British government,and was used to instill in common people ,a feeling of nationalism ,to make them against the British government , and as it was stopped by Lord Lytton in 1878 it was considered repressive

The Vernacular press act was passed in 1878, in an effort to silence those who were critical of the government. The act allowed the government to confiscate assets of newspapers along with their printing presses if the newspapers published something that was found "objectionable" . The Indians were enraged and wanted to form an all India association of educated Indians.
