In what ways was America like European imperialist countries

I'm mostly comparing Current US Imperialism to the "Old Skool" European Imperialism.

Even at our worst we were no where near as bad as them, yet you here all these people complaining about American Imperialism.  

When we arent actively doing anything to control others, we tend to be more subtle.

As for present day Europe, it doesnt seem to be doing much on the world stage, yet they get upset because of everything we are doing. Perhaps if you dont want us to play such a large roll, maybe you guys should step on up.
