The dissatisfaction with the British rule intensified in the 1870s and the 1880s. The Vernacular press act was passed in 1878, in an effort to silence those who were critical of the government. The act allowed the government to confiscate assets of newspapers along with their printing presses if the newspapers published something that was found "objectionable" . The Indians were enraged and wanted to form an all India association of educated Indians.

hey there,

good evening friend.

VERNACULAR PRESS ACT

This act was modelled on Irish press law and was passed in 1878 by British government in India.Lord Lytton was governor general at that time.

WHAT WAS ITS PURPOSE?

Its purpose was to control the movement of seditious material against british government.

HOW WAS IT A REPRESSIVE STEP?

(I)Now,the government started keeping an eye on the press.

(ii)When the report published in a newspaper was judged as seditious,it was warned.

(iii)If the newspaper neglected its warning, the newspaper was confiscated and machinery was seized.

This was all done to prevent spread of nationalism.

Thanks.
