The british established their power in India ,they began making detailed maps of the interior of the country .They established a department called survey of India to survey the country &prepare maps.Ptolemy map is based on mathematical calculation other people while preparing maps took Ptolemy book as base.

Answer: During the time of the colonialism of the Europeans they came to an agreement by dividing their territories and exchanging goods and to avoid conflicts. They never went to the spot and did the measures. They took a basic map and drew straight line. In parts of Africa you can see that the countries are divided or they look like square boxes.
