It was built in 1739 , by Thomas Coram, a great philanthropist of the time. Upon returning to London after spending time at sea, Coram found the issue of unwanted children to be one that could not be overlooked. The Foundling Hospital became a safe haven for those children that were either illegitimate or whose parents were unable to care for them.
