Gold was the first metal used. It did not need to be smelted as it appears in native form. Nuggets could be picked up from stream beds and easily worked with stone tools

The earliest smelted metals would have been from rocks used to make a fire surround. Copper and tin were discovered early on. Copper ore is easily found due to the distinctive green colour. Lead is often found with silver and both would have been available shortly after.
