The main equipment for protection of batsmen is the helmet, which was adopted to protect the head from injury. This was introduced in the late 1970s.
Batsmen are today also protected from injury with the introduction of thigh and arm guards, and, in some cases by chest guards.
To make the game fair to competing teams, technology has been introduced to review on-field umpires' decisions under the DRS or decision review systems. Each team gets 2 such opportunities every 80 overs; if they are proven right, their opportunities remain intact, while if they are proven wrong, they lose an opportunity.
Umpires are greatly benefited with the installation of stump and other cameras or equipment to assist them in making line judgements like no balls, run outs or stumpings. The snickometer, ultraedge etc are technologies that assist in judging whether or not a batsman's bat has made contact with the ball. Catches and boundaries are also judged with the help of technology, whenever the umpire is in doubt.
