In which case atoms share electrons?

Atoms share electrons when they neither can lose the electrons nor they can gain more electrons.
Losing electrons will require a large amount of energy and it would be difficult for the nucleus with more no. of protons to hold on to very few electrons.
Gaining of electrons makes it difficult for the nucleus having less no. of protons to hold on to more no. of electrons .
Therefore, In such a situation , atoms share electrons to achieve the stable electronic configuration of the nearest noble gas.
