Answer:

Anaerobic respiration (both glycolysis and fermentation) takes place in the fluid portion of the cytoplasm whereas the bulk of the energy yield of aerobic respiration takes place in the mitochondria.

Anaerobic respiration

It occurs when nutrients are incompletely oxidised using O₂.

It is low energy yield process which takes place in cytoplasm.

Examples :

\bigstar Lower organisms like bacteria, yeast (the end product is ethyl alcohol.)

\bigstar Skeletal muscles (the end product is lactic acid)

\bigstar Some endoparasites (due to lack of mitochondria)

In micro-organisms, fermentation is used in place of anaerobic respiration.

 \sf{C_6H_{12}O_6 \to 2C_3H_5O_3 \: (lactic \: acid) + 2ATP}
