Cylindrical lenses are designed, and prescribed, to correct astigmatism. It is not a disease, but rather an anatomical anomaly. It simply means that your cornea is not shaped like a sphere (ball), but more like the back of a spoon. Sometimes the internal crystalline lens of the eye is also affected.

It simply means that your cornea is not shaped like a sphere (ball), but more like the back of a spoon. Sometimes the internal crystalline lens of the eye is also affected. This will result in light focusing at two different places relative to the retina, or astigmatism. Cylindrical lenses have two different curves on the back surface. That design corrects the astigmatic vision, and allows light to come to a single point focus on the retina. These lenses can be combined with a plus (+) or minus (-)power to additionally correct myopia or hyperopia.
