Precipitation forms in the clouds when water vapor condenses into bigger and bigger droplets of water. When the drops are heavy enough, they fall to the Earth. If a cloud is colder, like it would be at higher altitudes, the water droplets may freeze to form ice.

Condensation in clouds when the water vapor cools in a cloud it forms water drops that can't stay aloft so it falls as rain. It also helps to have dust particles to start the droplets to form. Also as the rain falls it may carry a charge from the cloud to the ground and if the charge difference is great enough lighting jumps from the ground to the cloud and back again most people think it is the other way round. By the way the clouds form from evaporation of water as it cools in the sky
