In the 31st Constitutional Amendment Act the seats of Lok Sabha was increased from 525 to 545.

This was is considered one of the most important constitutional amendments of the Indian Constitution.

The purpose of this act was to increase the representation of states in the Lok Sabha. By this act, the limit of representatives of the States in the Lok Sabha increased from 500 to 525 and the limit of  Union Territories decreases from 25 to 20.
