This is called so because they perform this celebration with banana leaf lamps and candles set afloat in a river but the original counterpart of the festival of rows of lights that’s ‘Deepavali’ we celebrated has been taken over by shiny and affordable Chinese bulbs and lights that have replaced the clay lamps that were the main attraction a few years back.

Lom Kriyongh is Diwali of Thailand. It is also called as Loi Krathong. Loi means to float and Krathongs are small baskets of banana leaf. They are floated in the water during the festival. The festival happens according to the Thai lunar calendar. It coincides with the North Thailand calendar and Yi Peng festival when floating lanterns are lifted in the sky (skylamps). Beauty contests are also held. The festival is connected with various legends. Like, Nang Nopphamat, 13th century queen first used floating raft. Or Thailand is greatly influenced by Indian culture and also Budhha and Ramayana. King Rama stories are also famous there.
You can see the attached picture of Krathongs (decorated small baskets of leaves), and Thai women leaving Krathong in the water and sky lamps in the sky of Thailand. It is believed that leaving krathong symbolises letting go of your ego and negative thoughts, the lights or floating lights symbolises Buddha.
Because of disturbances to passing aircraft or birds, and due to littering of the places from lakhs of sky lamps released in the sky, the government of Thailand has restricted the usage and quality of sky lamps.
