A suspended bar magnet comes to rest along the north-south direction because of the magnetic field of the earth.

a suspended bar magnet will rest in geographic north south. when a magnet is freely suspended it's north pole gets attracted by the magnetic south polarity of the Earth (in the north direction) and it points to the North directon. A magnetic north pole is called so because it always points to the north ("North pointing pole").
