Explanation:

Actually the earth is believed to have a magnet inside it. Its north pole is towards the Geographical South pole and its South pole is towards Geographical North.

Hence if we are going to suspend a bar magnet freely, its north pole will be attracted towards geometric north and its south pole towards geometric south. Hence it will always rest in N-S direction.
