Bilirubin are excreted as bile pigments in the liver, which first passes to small intestines and then to large intestines.

The presence of bile salts in urine is the indication of liver disease or even jaundice. Liver disease can also occur in absence of bile salts.

The bile salts need more careful study than it usually gets as they are one of the most peculiar products of the liver.
