The proximity with these rivers allowed these first civilizations to be good farmers and to develop prosperous nations. The same happened in Egypt. Ancient Egypt settled cities next to the Nile River, and they became good farmers that depended on agriculture for quite some time. Something similar happened with China and the Indus Valley civilizations.
