In bryophyta, gametophyte or plant body is either thalloid which remains attached to the substratum by means of hair-like structures called rhizoids (false roots) or is differentiated into stem like structure called caulalia and or leaf like structures called phyllids. Rhizoid are like roots and so plays a role in absorption of water and minerals from substratum. Sporophyte is dependent on gametophyte for nutrition, that is, it acts as a parasite for gametophyte. Sporophytes, which produces spores and grows into gametophyte, obtain its nutrition from gametophyte which in turn absorb minerals from substratum.
