The languages used to inscribe the Edicts of Ashoka depended on the location of the Edicts and the intended audience of the Emperor’s proclamations. Most of his Edicts were in the Prakrit languages. The Edicts in the eastern parts of Ashoka’s empire, for instance, were in Magadhi Prakrit while those in the western parts were in a different Prakrit.
