The ISS is orbiting the earth at an altitude of about 400 kilometers which puts it right inside the THERMOSPHERE, the layer of the Earth's atmosphere directly above the mesosphere and directly below the exosphere. The thermosphere begins at about 80 kilometers above earth's surface extending up to 500 kilometers.
