Longitudinal waves depend on the mechanical stiffness of the medium.

Like  density and stiffness constant or modulus of elasticity.

Longitudinal waves cannot be generated if the particles cannot oscillate or vibrate to and fro.   In vacuum  or  extremely soft  materials, we cannot generate longitudinal waves.
