The speed of sound is highest in solid. The speed of sound depends on the density of the medium through which it is travelling. The higher the density of the medium, the faster is the propagation of sound. Since density of solids is higher than that of liquids and gasees, so sound travels faster in solids.

Sound is propagation of local disturbance in a medium. Molecules in a solid are more tightly packed than those in gases. So it is easier for solid molecules to collide with neighboring molecules and facilitate the propagation of disturbance. Imagine a material as set of imaginary sheets connected to each other by springs. If we displace (push or pull) the sheet at one of the end, the disturbance will be carries subsequently. Now in solids, distance between the sheets is smaller thus, disturbance is carried more quickly. That's why the speed of sound greater in solid than others mediums. Understood?
