Plants usually absorb iron from the region of soil, where its roots are planted. This region of soil called the rhizosphere is influenced by the plant root secretions, as well as micro-organisms present in the soil.

 

The most common form of iron found on earth is in the form of Fe3+. However, plants absorb and assimilate the Fe2+ form, as it is most suitable for them. The Fe2+ form is lower in pH and is more freely available for absorption by the roots.
