As we inhale , the oxygen rich air enters the lungs after passing through the nose and larynx. It carries air to the bronchus . The air then moves into the bronchioles and then into the alveoli where the exchange of gases actually takes place.
The alveoli are surrounded by blood capillaries . Only a very thin membrane separates the air in the alveoli from the blood in the capillaries . Oxygen diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses out of it through the thin membrane.
