Fragmentation is a mode of asexual reproduction in which the organism breaks up into smaller pieces on maturation. Fragmentation and regeneration are two different processes. Different organisms reproduce by these methods individually. Both the processes do not occur in the same individual During fragmentation, each fragment grows into a new individual. Fragmentation takes place in plants, animals, unicellular organisms etc. *In plants like spirogyra, single cell gets stripped off from the parent and develops into new individual. *In fungi like yeast and mushrooms, a piece from hyphae gets detached and grows into a new individual. *In animals like sponges and corals, colonies increase in size and diameter by the process of fragmentation. Echinoderms, during their larval stages reproduce by the process of fragmentation.

Fragmentation occur in green algae -spirogyra.

Process-
1)the parent body breaks down into two or many pieces.
2)these pieces are called fragments.
3)each fragment can give rise to a new organism
